Booting

Booting up and restarting Servers and Cluster Machines

Servers (billie, ella, annette, and pele)

should be shut down and rebooted from the command line:

billie:~# shutdown -h now

If you want the machine to shutdown, use the h option, to reboot, use the r option:

billie:~# shutdown -r now

If you have to reboot pele, please restart dhcp once the machine is back up:

pele:~# /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server

Cluster machines

that boot from the network, can be shutdown by the power button, but also fine to use the shutdown command above. Cluster machines that boot from their own hard drives should be shutdown by the command line. If in doubt, shutdown by the command line, as this is never wrong.

The following cluster machines boot from the network and do not have, or do not use, hard drives:

  • coltrane
  • herbie
  • nina
  • ronnie
  • sarah
  • martino
  • oscar

The following cluster machines boot from their own hard drive:

  • miles
  • mimi
  • mingus

Special instructions when turning on the cluster:

Coltrane is dependent on miles for its OS, so boot up miles before coltrane. The rest of the machines above are dependent on mimi for their OSes, so make sure mimi is running before starting the others. All that is required for booting machines is hitting the power button. It is a good idea to be watching the monitor for that machine, just to make sure they boot up normally.

Note: Miles and coltrane are no longer in the computer closet. They are going to be replaced, and are running for the time being in the commons area (not in the lab) under the counter by the window.
