day1-sat

19 Jan 2008

We were suppose to leave the evening of the 17th to fly to Entebbe, Uganda by way of London. That morning I noticed that there had been a British Air plane crash at Heathrow. There were no fatalities, thankfully, but the plane was blocking one of the runways. An hour or two later British Airways called and told me that there had been an 'incident' that morning, and that unfortunately our flight had to be canceled. So, she offered us seats on an earlier flight, which was actually leaving 2 hours late, so in the end would only be an hour earlier than our original flight. We took it, and continued scrambling to get ready. After the phone call in the morning about the 'incident', I was amused when we got on the British Air flight in London, and were given a complimentary newspaper with a heading, 'Just 20 seconds from disaster', and a picture of the crashed plane.

I wasn't really sure what to expect in Uganda. Obviously, it is third world, and in a very volatile section of the world. We had visited South Africa a couple of years ago, so I was curious how different it would be. We knew power would be spotty in places, and internet rare. Certain parts of the country we would stay out of because of Ebola, and others because they are still 'hot spots' (prone to outbreaks of civil war). Out of curiousity, I had checked a couple of western restaurants to see if any existed in Uganda, and had found they have no American fast-food restaurants.

We were able to sleep a bit on the two very long flights, so when we arrived on the morning of the 19th, we told our hosts we wanted to try to stay up and get onto a Ugandan schedule.
